Excess garbage has become a big problem in the last decade.
We realized that landfills are not what we thought they were going to be. The
fact that landfills as safe as we thought they would be. We did not separate
certain materials, so then chemicals, and other hazardous elements, began going
through the bottom of the landfill, leaking into water tables, leaching to
minerals and other natural elements, and making there was to people; where they
were (and still are) then exposed to the chemicals. We have made many changes
for the good, when it comes to garbage, lately. We have begun to recycle with
better efficiency. Now most people have a garbage bin AND a recycle bin (that
is the same size as the garbage bin) at their homes. We have made great strides
but only when you compare where we are now to where we were before. There are
still many things we need to get better at (and continue getting better at).
One of those ‘things’ is being more innovative. We still do not have a perfect
way of getting rid of all of the garbage that we create. In my mind, the best answer would be to
not create garbage in the first place. This is known, but it does not lead to
any change. People really need to be more aware of what they use and consume
and throw away. Simply being more aware of what we do on a daily basis and the
implications of our actions could be the biggest change of all.
